    I find WFRP is a fantastic source for adding flavor to my B/X or OSE games. Your direction here is a great one. Throwing in the idea of using the Advantage/Disadvantage mechanic on top of a simple background/career list could do it. Advantage does give a big boost to a roll chance, but to keep the idea simple it could be used even at level 1. Mr. Smith repairs the sword, with a DC of say 15, with Advantage. If anyone else attempts it, they will most likely fail as they are not a smith, like Mr. Smith. Shadowdark uses it quite a bit for class abilities and it works quite well.

    I always loved the old art in both Basic and Advanced. And like you, it felt like some of it was possible even for someone of my limited skill to sort of imitate. Jeff Dee was my favorite, but the others were all so good, and each very distinctive. The amazing thing is they were given the art assignment after the page was laid out, so they had to shape their art to fit into the allotted space. There's a great doc on early D&D art called Eye of the Beholder, a must see, especially for D&D fans.

    Ive felt its like the orc to me asia and demonology orcs were demons of greed and were boar baised, whilst dnd orcs are based on lord of the rings depictions but colored green. Still boar based but far more humanified minus the greed based eating of the original monster. So i say theres two one the baor demon ork, and one the tusked humanoid in green orc. So kobalds the same one the race that formed around dragons and the dog race convergent but a different species. Or the dog race is the original and the lizard version is magically altered to better serve dragons. Similar to the dragon born who were altered human slaves. Both not the same as those with dragon blood from a dragon mateing But altered to be suedo draconic hence the varient wings being a rare feature as the original dna would be stronger then the mutation dna in most cases. My question is were do dog kobalds come from.

    I'd love to know which you prefer PBTA or Fate. Or what each is better at. I'm familiar with and growing in my GMing ability and love of Fate. PBTA seems similar in many ways. Perhaps PBTA is simpler and more limited by the prescribed "moves". I don't know. Thanks for any thoughts you can offer.

    • @RedDiceDiaries
      @RedDiceDiaries 4 місяці тому

      I think they both have a couple of similar strengths, particularly for one shots, they're both easy sets of rules and are quick to get up and running. To me Fate is more generic whereas PBTA games tend to be more specifically focused on the subject of a particular game, it's largely a matter of personal preference, but if I have a PBTA game for a particular genre I tend to go with that, whereas, if I want a set of rules for a one shot with more flexibility I lean towards Fate.

    I've been thinking of this for awhile. Really just wanted a way to roll for class/wheel house skill set or something like that. If it isn't in the their wheel house, then a 1 in d6 + attribute mod. If it is, then use the Turn undead table: • HD = difficulty of task. • If the task is out side the target number, then use up resources to lower the difficulty to a target number you can roll for. • Add your attribute mod to the roll. I haven't figured out which turn undead table to use yet. I have about 4 games with a turn undead table using different dice. I like the one form OSE, a simple 2d6, but the others use once that would allow more modifires if uou want to use them. Although, because the table already takes level into consideration, I'd say only the attribute mod would only be used. Also, the other tables allow for more granularity in target numbers, if you want that. I think adding naritive flaire in degree of success would be easy to overlay onto this idea too.

    I play solo RPGs a lot, but even players of traditional TTRPGs can get something out of Mythic. 1. When testing a new scenario you plan to run as GM. It allows you to see if there are kinks that need to be ironed out. 2. When you're learning a new ruleset or edition. Hands on experience is a better teacher, but you don't always have someone to help you before you go to your game session. Running the game with Mythic by yourself familiarizes you with the common rolls and combat so you have a base of experience.

    This is an excellent review of the preview. Comprehensive but you covered a lot at a reasonable pace. I've been looking for the right system to run a cyberpunk game, and while I've been tempted by Interface Zero for SWADE, I'm honestly looking for sonething a little less crunchy as I'm also runnning a PF2e game and am not sure how much more brain space I can occupy with specialized tactical rules. The WN gsmes have always seemed to hit a sweet spot between rules lite and customization, so this might be the pick, though I am very intrigued by what I've seen of Neon City Overdrive as well. Good to have plenty of options i suppose!

    The more clear your core idea of what the thing should be, the easier of a time you'll have sorting out what does and doesn't fit, but also the easier of a time you'll have getting others on the same page. Having a few short, evocative sentences of the sort one might use as particularly good Fate Aspects is a solid start, and I tend to like to have a clear High Concept, and a bunch of supporting phrases that further define it, though there's other ways to get your ideas organized that'll work. I've seen folks use mind-maps, venn diagrams and organizing concepts in terms of concentric circles of how core they are to the concept. Whatever works, so long as it solidifies the idea. In particular, I really want to explicitly nail down core core character-and-story tensions down. White hats vs black hats can be fine, and at least a bit of it honestly helps a lot, but I prefer value tensions where there's a more "live" tension. Balancing Duty and one's personal Desires is a classic. Another is using the enemy's methods making you more like the enemy (staring into the abyss, and all). Or Bear vs Criminal. It's a thing that's often overlooked, but knowing that can /really/ help you to decide what make the cut entirely, what's being sidelined for if/when it's time to muddy the waters. It also helps set up a really good first session because opening with something that supports the main conflicts/tensions is always solid way to get the ball rolling in the right general direction.

    Hi John! Great stuff, as usual. Quick suggestion: you should talk about your new Substack (and Podcast adress) during your show. I discovered it a bit by accident and was happy to do so, but it happened only recently and I could have missed it entirely! I love following what you do but cannot if I don't know about it, and I'm sure there are people out there that were not as lucky as I was. Cheers!
